Its a matter of what kind of traffic you are getting - the site that spends more time on higher converting keywords and ranks appropriately wins.
You don't just want "traffic". Traffic doesn't do anything. You want qualified visitors that are seeking out your site as a unique resource. That, and you want them to spend over three minutes on your site and view at least 4 pages. That and having a bounce rate of less than 50% to me is a better indication of good traffic than just traffic numbers.
For example - spending your time ranking on a high traffic site that you aren't the best qualified site to convert like for instance spending a ton of energy ranking for "t-shirts" when in all actuality you only really sell halter tops doesn't make sense. Sure, more people search for t-shirts than halter tops but I would rather have 5,000 monthly visitors at a 5% conversion rate (250 sales!) than 20,000 visitors at a .75% conversion rate (150 sales). Plus, ranking for a more specific product is a lot easier to do - so less time and money invested from the get go!
