Top ranking on search engines
Webmasters and SEOs always try their best to get the top rank for their sites and they continue until they get it and try all old and advanced techniques to get it and I am also not an exception.
My question is that is having your site on top rank on major search engines is really best thing in SEO, does a top rank site always have the highest traffic?
I think its not true as often I have seen people prefer to go throgh sites that are ranked at two or three or fourth rank and only a few directly go to the site ranked at top.
I also often avoid site at the top and click on 2 or 3 ranked site for my query...........So I think having a second or third rank is better than having top rank. What do you think? I just want to know your views about it.
Thanks.........

It seems to an established fact that the number one listing gets a lot more clicks than no. 2 and 3.
In my opinion the title text and description text are really important factors for where I click. If number 2 or 3 writes some compelling copy that just draws me in, they will get more traffic.

Yes. I agree with you. Because you can be in TOP 5 burt with bad description and never get clicks.

I think were talking conversion rates. The top sites get clicked but people choose one a little lower down as the place to purchase or obtain a service. It could be the cost of a item or just the wording of the content that people are attracted to.

High SERPs ranking is one of the factors in getting traffic however, there's no guarantee that you can get good conversion rates when you're on top. Visitors tend to visit a site that matches what they're looking thru title and description of the site

The first 3 spots are the best position to increase traffic. The title and description is what closes the deal on a visit.

I agree that it is the Title and Description that seals the deal. Often, I click on the bottom ranks if the title and description appeals to me.

Top ranking on search engine is a great advantage in terms of traffic. But it does not mean that it brings you always a huge traffic.

It depends on your definition of SEO. For most people the answer is a resounding yes. If you look at everything on a larger scale or perhaps consider it SEM then certainly the other factors are crucial. Top rankings are only one piece of the puzzle. However, all else equal a top ranking will prevail.

Effective writing of title and description really plays a vital role...
If its catchy and well written there is greater chance that your site will get clicks from visitors...

Watch the others
Obviously you would be great to be number one but having a good description is best. Top three is fine. Keep an eye on the other three in your SERPs. Maybe they keyword stuffed to get the number one ranking but their description sucks. If so don't worry about getting to number one just stay number two with a better description.

I think being in top 5 is better...plus a good description that exactly describe the whole site...absolutely bring good traffic...it gives the visitors hint of what they are looking for...

Getting to the top of the engines can be really the most important step in ensuring a website having traffic and after that step taken, some knowledge is needed for adding revenue to the websites.

yes there's an advantage to be on top of SERPs but it's a list of web pages.. so there are choices available for the searcher. So if you want them to visit your site, the title and description should be a good intro of the site.
