If one only knows a little bit about HTML and does not have a website, how will one earn by using the internet?

But seriously, there are programs for sale that teach you step-by-step just what to do to build a profitable website. The only problem is that, there are also a million other people doing exactly the same thing because they bought it too.

Unique sites are often more fruitful. You can learn a lot by reading here at the forums and in books.

(This question should probably be under "Revenue.")

1. Find a niche you can provide quality content for
2. Write/get GREAT content
3. Set up wordpress - you don't necessarily have to use it like a blog
4. Learn how to get traffic (and do it)
5. Learn how to monetize that traffic (and do it)

Two very important ingredients: Motivation and time.

I agree that a blog could be a nice venue to start a business - and it is free. But don't expect to earn much from it (especially if you will use a sub domain). If you really are serious in wanting to earn online, set aside a budget for a domain, hosting, for a website as well as for promotion and advertisement.

Do something that will make your site different from the rest of the crowd.

You can make a living from selling affiliate stuff, sell advertising space etc.
