Have you flirted with disaster?
Sometimes I try out little SEO tricks to get ranked better without knowing if they are really above-board or not. I know some of you have pushed your luck with borderline black-hat SEO methods. Some say the line is fine and some say it is a blurry gray area.
What is the worst thing that you have done to a site without getting banned?
You don’t have to tell what site you did it on, only what the trick was.
Disclaimer: Kids, don’t try this at home. These are trained professionals.

I try not to tread in the grey area. I follow the TOS. My internet business is growing and I do not want to get banned. No Black hat or Grey area for me. I just want to make money online legit.

I never used Black and Grey Hat, I still prefer using the right way.. I think what I have done before is not that worst, but I have double submitted the site I'm working with before when I'm still not familiar with SEO.

I've toyed with several things that would be blackhat. Most of them do not pan out for me though.

I tried out the usual spamming on post, for about 50+ per day but I guess it didn't work out well...

When I first started doing SEO I just stuffed some keywords on my content! but I'm just curious and tried some BH technique in the past and then I changed to whitehat! Come on guys! don't wash your hand here... just tell the truth!

Yes, black hat SEO can be a bummer.
I did a reciprocal link with just 1 site, I got kicked off of Google's index.
However, it was probably because my site was new, but who knows.

all i did was blackhat, and i am earning around $1,000 a month off from them.
for my true white hat techniques i am earning a measely $33 for 4 months now.
goes to show how flawed and not perfect yet the SE's are.
of course it's a trade secret we black hatters share and we operate under the radar.
you have to have intense knowledge of the SE's first before you can try to do blackhat.
a simple technique would be
1. get index as fast as the road runner
2. build links to you like an escalator rate without hold for months on going
3. make fresh and great content [even if you just copied them make sure you add stuff and make it SEO friendly hence what you copied must've been crap anyways]
4. and lastly enjoy the reap of rewards from the risk you taken

That's risky stuff and it's nice that you weren't penalized. BTW, the most riskiest thing I did was when I added my sites and blogs on alot of link farms but those link farms had atleast PR3. Actually they did good and helped with my rankings, although I already stopped doing that for a very long time now.

thanks, but i am not doing it for clients and the likes, i am just doing it for my own experiments and for personal fame, you know like when you say to yourself "yes, i kick google's arse!" it can be gratifying, and i'm earning from it too. but i don't know for how long. also i don't recommend it to people. [yes just let me do it haha]

I did that once. I have put some invisible text on site without knowing about its effect. Fortunately somebody warned me about that.

Funny thing about white/gray/black hat SEO: Isn't it all gaming the system?
Do things the "right way" with white hat. Do things ethically and your site will rank well and you have that warm and fuzzy feeling since you didn't wear a 'dirty' hat. Then all of the sudden one day the search engines decide to change their algorithm and then, "BANG!" - You are gone off the SERPS.
gray/black hat. You are despised by the white hats but and you get listed faster then they are. Then "bang" your site is gone and no rankings (notice, bang is not in all caps like above?). No prob Bob. You just do it again, and again, and again...No waiting months.
I don't do gray/black hat but I thought I would make that observation.

I am totally against with Black hat SEO tactics. If anybody make efforts, develop a website and start business online then it should be promote properly with all ethical methods as per Google guidelines.

It is quite possible that some of us have different interpretations of what constitutes black hat.
For example, how many would say that strategically placing keywords in all ALT and TITLE attributes (for images) throughout the pages is black hat? Some SEO experts recommend it and some warn against it. See what I mean about the gray area?
Perhaps first we need a pole to get a vision of where the line should be drawn. Some sort of pole that lists many of the most popular on-page techniques so that we can check mark (black hat or white hat) for each. Although, I wouldn't want to be the guy who makes it, I just thought it might help to get us all on the same page about it.
Thoughts?
