I have never tried working on a real state site but Ive checked the keyword "real state" and its clear to see that it has a high search volume and has high competitors.. So I guess it takes how many months before you achieve what you want. If you want to be visible in SE's in a short period of time try to target long tail keywords first.

It normally takes 3mons for you to see the results. but depending on the work that is put on to the project maybe it would take much lesser time.

Just like an ordinary site, you need to research for proper / appropriate KWs for it; link build it. Much better if it has a blog support it.
Regarding on how long will it take to rank... It depends on your chosen targeted KW and how many competitors you have.

If you do focus on keyword "real estate", i think you might need more then half year since this is very hot keyword.

If you're doing this for an agent make sure you really dig into the keywords for your region. And make sure you have really good tracking someware so you can provide some good feedback. Generating some solid (new clients) leads for a real estate agent can really pay off for them.
Time frame could be months or even years for some real estate markets.

This is going to be a tough one since many real estate related sites are having stiff competition on making it on top...
This will take a lot time but progress of your campaign will also depend on what strategies you are going to use...

I have a number of real estate sites and the problem is that the people you are competing with will have deep pockets when it comes to marketing their sites. As someone has already said you need to do your keyword reasearch and choose keyword combinations that will convert well for you/your client and give you a resonable chance of success within a reasonable timeframe.
I have got a website into the top ten for "new homes" for a while and it took an age and didn't convert well, but it is much easier, cheaper and perhaps more beneficial to go for geographic terms e.g real estate in Bolton or even competitor names.
Cheers,
Tony

For small geographical locations with lower competition, 3 to 6 months is reasonable especially with long-tail keywords. If you’re talking about large markets like Los Angeles Real Estate or New York Real Estate, then perhaps it will take a couple of years of diligent work to break into the top rankings.
