On page vs Off page factor in SEO

To get top rankings we have to optimize our pages but simultaneously we need strong back linking. Should we give more weightage to on page optimization or to off page factor.

Google has started dumping sites with heavy irrelevant back linking but still counts back linking as an important factor in their algorithm. So what should be the proportionate ratio we should put our effort on both the factors? Any views ?

If you are aiming to get high PR then you should focus more on off page optimization though you still need to give importance to on page.

The names are not that important any longer. Both on page and off page factors still count but excessively optimizing both will be having the opposite effect.

off page optimizing will benefit a site a lot with terms of popularity and money income of course...but as we all know, on page optimizing must be done first, right?

On my own opinion, off-page optimization should be given more attention because it drives more traffic to your site. Although on-page is also important but off-page is a long term task. So for me, It should be given more priority

Off-page optimization is by far the most time-consuming task. But, don’t neglect the on-page work because this not only contributes to PR, but conversions and sales.

Both onpage and offpage should be given importance in terms of SEO. Your onpage should compliment the offpage factors for better results. Although Google gives more importance to the offpage side of things, Yahoo still gives weight on the onpage factors.

Once your website is already established and full of qulity content, off page optimization is far more important. But until you have lots of seo friendly content, I think on page optimization is of bigger importance. Just my two cents...

On Page and Off Page Optimizations are both important. On On Page Factors, we should not forget keyword density, relevancy and prominence. For Off Page Factors, linking to relevant links should be always take into consideration.
