Advantages and Disadvantages of SEO job from home.

With 3 SEO websites I have a lot of clients who pays me good money. Year ago I quit my daytime management job, and enjoy life working from home.

Advantages:

- I work any time I want.
- I take day off any time I want.
- I travel any time I want.
- I work with my laptop in amy place.
- I impress girls telling them that I am only 25 and already make more than their fathers.
- I bought good car last fall (Jeep Grand Cherokee).
- I love my job.
- I love some of my clients.

Disatvantages:

- I am 100% depend from my clients. If they can't pay I am screwed.
- People don't like to pay after job done. Last year I lost $3000 after guy refused to pay me (he still rank #1 on Google). Just month ago guy refused to pay me $1000 after I gave him 30% increase in traffic. Month ago my client refused to pay $300 telling me that he got family emergency, another guy refused to pay $600 and refuse to answer.
- Some people are pain in neck. They pay and expect you to work 120 hour a week for them. I had people who was paid me $500 and began to send me 20-25 emails each day with questions about their site. 5 month later I told them to "F... off".
- People blame me that nobody buying their product. I gave some guys good traffic. 52 people visited "buy now" page during the first week but never bought their product which they are trying to sell for $70 (you can find the same stuff in Wall-Mart for $15). I give people traffic and good positions on search engines.... it is not my fault that product isn't good enough or overpriced.
- Spam!
- I got sleeping disorder. It is hard to sleep when you work with complicated project.
- I have to manage my business accounts, count taxes, deal with legal issues for small business, answer phone calls, reply to emails, manage money, manage my own websites, fight with stress.
- I am conserned about future because it is hard to predict is SEO will survive in 10 years.

Anyway, I am still going to college to improve my education and I also apply every time I see job opening in big SEO and advertising companies.

It is also hard to resist spending too much time online working for your clients! I've lost count of the late evenings I have invested, long after I should have gone to bed.

sniperhiga: After reading your post I sent it to a friend of mine and asked him "is this you?" LOL. He works out of his house, doesn't even start jobs until after 5 pm because people bug him throughout the day.

The only difference from you and him that I have read is: He doesn't start a job until he's paid. (web site designer)
He called me the other day telling me how a customer wanted a "myspace" page made up to look a special way. Not wanting the job but not refusing it he gave them an outrageous price. They paid in full and now he's in "myspace" hell as he calls it. LOL

I guess what I am saying is: your not a lone in the boat your in. I seen others have the same problems."

Thank you guys for support.
By the way, another thing which is bugging me is agents who are trying to sell me their services, asking me if I need help to promote clients, use their software, content writers, and people who wan't to get piece of cake.
I never start my job before people pay. But sometimes they pay first payment and refuse to pay bonus payments after goals reached.

Advantages are an illusion when you're connected to clients who are dependent on your results. You're really just stuck there...IMO. At least that's for me. However, there's more confidence in working at home for me.

I understand your situation there Sergey... You are really going to get pissed off most of the time but we can't avoid to experience such situations. I had a friend too who works at home as a designer. He is paid good amount of money. I guess it really depends on your client. Trust and understanding is very important on both part. Gaining trust is really the best thing to attain in this kind of industry.

I think most of the clients don't have much idea on what and how we work hard for their sites. Then in the end, still point fingers on us for not getting the conversions they need... Very frustrating sometimes...

I agree on the above post. In home based job, you can do your work anytime but you have no assurance also that you client will pay in time.

Everyone's situation is different. I work from home and meet clients at their office or at local coffee shops.

One of my designers has a two year old and works at home. He faces a much bigger challenge than I do.

It's great for overhead.

Search engine optimization home

The biggest problem is that the success of SEO depends upon number of leads generated and not clicks.

If your click rate is high and the product which you are marketing is poor, then those clicks will hardly convert into leads.

This could create some friction between you and your client.

If you are working with an established firm, then it can bring you a steady flow of income. However if you are working at home, then it will give you more edge since you would be responsible for the project from start to end.

I agree with you.

Here what works for me:

When person comes to me with brand new website and 0 experience in online marketing it meant that 99% this person will be disappointed giving hard time.
This people always hope that they could earn millions and blame everyone when they realize reality of online marketing.
Also, many people don't really want to work after they hire SEO. They don't post new content, they don't want to update site, they don't want to help as well. Without team work it is impossible to reach success.

If person comes with established website which already makes some money (For example $18 000/year) it is 99% of success for both sides. Even if something wrong and after a month traffic and sales remain on the same place... this people understand everything and make their decision about future work based on what SEO person did.
For example: I show some guy with experience that 7 bloggers wrote about his site, i added site in 40 niche directories and portals, we got link from educational site, press release was published in some local newspaper, we made submissions in 120 quality directories, and we made a lot of submissions in social sites. People with experience understand that it is a good work I did and it will give result over amount of time.

All the advantages you listed could be a disadvantage as well.

- I work any time I want.
- I take day off any time I want.
- I travel any time I want.
- I work with my laptop in any place.
