Whats do they mean when they say "Unix Operating system (linux/FreeBSD)"

Hi, I hope I am posting it the right forum. I was looking at a website about autoresponders. It mentions "
Very minimum system requirements

Unix Operating system (linux/FreeBSD)
Perl5 Interpreter (standard on unix machines)
SendMail (standard on unix machines)"

Does this mean I need hosting that supports Unix or Linux? I know this sounds stupid but I have no idea what they actually mean. Any help is appreciated.
