About how many inbound links would you need to be ranked in the top 5 for a pretty competitive real estate keyword (ie. "Atlanta real estate" or "Seattle Real Estate")?
Has anyone had success doing so and would like to share some of their tips or tricks?
It's very hard to tell. With the phrase I am ranking well on, there is another site about 7th that only has about 10 inbound links .... sites below it has over 100+ inbound links.
You might get 100 links from your friends geocities music site, and still not appear in the top 100. yet 1 link from google.com could get you number 1. It depends on who is linking to you. Best thing is to get as much as possible, from well established sites, and keep them on for as long as possible.
Also, the PR of the sites linking to you matter.... if one site has 50 PR7+ sites linking to them with anchor text and in the same niche.. its possible they will rank higher then a site with 200 PR4 sites linking to it.. without good anchor text

Assuming that the above is correct - shouldn't it be pages instead of sites?
