Question Social Networks vs. Forums?

Could you please explain what's the main difference between Social Networks and Forums?

Profiles? you can build in both.

Posts, comments? Well you can as well do in forums.

Backlinks? Well dofollow forums provide those too.

Communities? Forums have a lot of good people for networking.

Some social networks even do not provide dofollow links, such as Propeller. They can be real closed communities too, hard to get in and earn more credibility. Like getting hot on Digg, etc.

Then why these social sites become so popular every day?

social networks are/have become popular because they have a feature that you can post good thing(much like promoting it) so it can be view by other members as well. but on forums, you are only allow to do that if your at the right thread.

Forums works well in getting quality related backlinks (forums relative to your site) that can help you boost your SERP rankings and PR as well...
While...
Social Networking works well in bringing traffic if you have a pretty decent strategy on how you'll gonna promote your site and interact with the whole network itself...

Social networks are a newer hybrid of the two. They allow you to talk in a forum, chat, blog, put up a profile etc. Forums are valuable to me because of the variety of opinion.

forums and social networking sites are both helpful for your site. Using both methods are much greater rather than one.

I agree Laila, only because everybody says that. But I notice that posts or comments in Social Networks get indexed by search engines very quickly, while I am not sure about forums.

Social Networking sites are more popular than forums because of the kind of add ons they provide. Social Networks basically acts as a bridge between individuals where one can stay in contact with their friends and family. Whereas in Forums one can share their problems and look for answers to queries one have.

You know, Josh, I'd like to see why people are using Social Networks and had become so popular. Why they even evolved, since forums had been just as good.

and i think in social network there are some features that many users were very much like, compare to forums. In social network you can customize your page just like creating their own website and put a bunch of pictures.

The recent version of VB got groups, messaging on profile etc. Which is a mini version of the social networking as well.
