Hello SEO-Heads.
Have you seen the not so new trend of linking to the home page from a
logo instead of the traditional "home" text menu or graphic? Here is what
has been happening:
• Some web sites link to their own home page with only the logo image.
• Other web sites link to the home page with both logo and text/image menu links.
• Still others do the above, plus add breadcrumbs.
When I first saw this I thought, "what the heck are these folks doing this
for?" After conducting my own testing/research I found out why...
A logo with good alt text used as to link to the home page carries more
weight than anchor text. Yep, it's true. I had a hard time swallowing this
line of thought until I saw it for myself. It made sense after analyzing the
resulting data.
The problem I have seen arising is that many webmasters are following
this trend without the required "good" alt text intact. I believe they think
it's a "hip trend" instead of having intrinsic value. The value is in the alt
text!
The old standby "alt text" takes on new meaning when you consider the
difference in SE position this small piece of text can make. It's huge!
Cool beans, eh?
The only thing that irks me is it took a while to decide to test my theory
and whoever thought of it first beat me to the punch.
Anyone have any idea when or where this trend began?
