The very first thing to look is the keyword competence, see if the keyword your using is widely used by user's around the globe. you can check it by using tools, you can use google adwords https://adwords..google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Keyword Competition? You mean you only depend on competition only? I think that's not enough. You may have checked your competition, but are you aware of your keyword searches per day?

I think u can use Google Commands like:
allinurl:<keyword>
allintitle:<keyword>
I use this commands to check how many competitions I have. I also use the things told by the guys here.

Keywords are the main and very important for every website because we know that keywords are basically the search term in search engines so everybody want to come on top pages with their targeted keywords.

our usual (quick overview) research of a search goes like this.
1. amount of exact match phrases in the titles in first 3 pages of the search
2. allintitle: search
3. allinanchor: search
4. allintext: search
5. amount of people advertising on it (PPC)
then general optimisation levels and backlinks of the number 10 site and number 5 sites.
specific research of individual sites is much more complex.

SmallBusinessSEO, what about the number of indexed pages? Can you explain why don't you consider this the most important?
