yes, I agree, forum posting is most effective and then article submission, all have their own importance, like directory submission helps to get link popularity, its easy way as compare to article submission, and forum posting drive traffic to your site, I don't think its help to improve ranking as compare to article submission, Article submission helps to improve ranking.

i enjoy forum posting the most to be honest, as i like to read, the exchange of ideas, and a chance to say an occasional thing or two, as i have read quite a bit on seo the last few years. i do regular directory submission for the backlinks and it's work, and i wonder about its effectiveness. since i'm not that good of a writer i haven't tried the article submission route yet.
as far as theory goes, gaining quality and quantity of backlinks is the thing that helps in the serps and page rank....

For me these 3 are best for targeting keywords as long as we are not spamming and niche to our website.

In my views article submission is the best technique. Article submission can be a daunting task when you are trying to do link building for many keywords over multiple sites. There are some free tool that will allow you to manage your article directory submissions and stop submitting to the same article directories over and over.

Forum Commenting

According to Matt Cutts (Googler) participating in the communities and commenting there is the best way to get backlinks.

All of them are important, but if I had to pick one, I would choose article marketing because articles get syndicated to other websites.

There is no best method. You need a good mix of all these techniques.

Articles are great because you write article about your niche and insert your link there, and google loves to find your link in text related to your site. Forums are also good if they relate to your niche, but still articles got much less outbound links than forums, which makes them more powerful.

I believe that articles have a longer life.......
Forum posts...add to your credibility as an "expert" ..but could have a short life...if you pick a short lived forum..
Remember there are many of those....

Tip...make a few posts and check to see if Google picks them up...
If not move on...if your only intent is to get links...
I post on a forum that is nofollow....about 2 thousand so far..
But..I think I help folks.....

I agree with Jim ( above ) on this one in relation to articles - they do seem to have a longer shelf life and a longer "burn". forum backlinks and posting can offer a short burst and should not be relied on as your main link building.

For me forum posting is the one of the best. Being active and actively promoting a website on a forum works on a number of different levels. From making personal contacts, known as networking, to actually building links that point to back to a forum, a creative internet marketer would have no problem mining the linking gold that lays within the internet. There are a number of reasons that this is good way to build links, promoting anything through forum posting works best if a website owner chooses a forum that has content related to the content of the site they are seeking to promote. Promoting a website on an online forum is a great way for the website owner to establish a good amount of good will and credibility. When someone is active on a forum on a helpful way, answering questions, providing helpful tips, being a resource for others, their reputation will grow by leaps and bounds. This all lays the groundwork for a time in the future when someone seeking information, needs help, and chooses to go to the website of the person promoting their site on the forum. So I recommend you to use forum posting.
