Blogger: Splitting a column into 2

Hello there,
My main blog provides two major services, courses and contests. So it would be a great idea if I can split the page vertically (only the home page) and dedicate each side of the page for one of the two main services.
I would love to split the column I have on the home page into two columns vertically. I have seen a similar thread teaching how to split the header column into two columns, but I want to split the column in the center of my homepage.
check the page at
www.ancient-egypt-history.com
Any ideas?
I know the solution might be long and boring, so I don't expect any replies soon

Thank you for the quick reply, but no, I don't want to split the side column, I want to split the main column on my home page that is titled "Egyptology Courses into two columns vertically titled "Egyptology Courses" and "Egyptology Contest"

There is a simple coding fix I have noticed once out there that I can put right after any column to split it into two, but I don't know where I found it, I was not interested back then...
