Use textual CAPTCHA for image verification to post or signup?

Setup a bad word anti-spam and swearing list which rejects the posts?

Block temporary emails used for signup?

Track IP Addresses and hunt them down or simply block from the server?

There is lots of options, you just need to work out what is best for you. All forums and chatrooms will however need mods to run successfully.

Have you checked the Simplemachines support forum for any mods that will help make it harder for spammers to register? I am not to familar with there forum software. Playgamesarcade has some very good suggestions.

Code:

I use most of what is mentioned here for vB:
http://www.forumdr.com/dealing-with-vbulletin-spam/748/

even though its vB specific, there will be similar mods and strategy for any software.

In my experience, not one thing works on its own - you need multiple things.

Me too suffered from the same problem. I cant even differentiate the spam emails. Then, I looked into the site http://spamspamgoaway.com/ to know the spam details. Hope it helps.

Always update your forum software version as much as possible... Download security updates and mods. Best ways, also, make sure you use recaptcha and additional security question(s) that arent hard for the average person to answer but enough for a bot to not recognize. For example, 2 + 2 = , or What color is the sky , or even just spell the word hello.

Will deffinitely have a great impact on the spamming activity on your forum.

One more, which may offend some people but, is intended in no way to be offensive to anyone. Limiting the languages available on your forum or limiting the countries able to access your forum may help aswell. Some countries have had a record of 90% forum users working for a forumposting company or other traces of spamming.

As a forum owner, you may notice alot of medical ad spammers. This is because pĥarmaceutical companies (sometimes international, sometimes illegal) pay very cheap for alot of advertisement by hiring many people of other countries. (Trying not too mention any country specific).

Hope this helped you.

Вы обижаете меня господин!
(speaking for the offended innocent russians, joke lol)

Can't you just IP and email block? Recaptcha is a better idea, rather than killing off entire countries traffic. I don't recommend that.

Also no-follow the post links, if they are abusing that.

You gotta be realistic.. Think you can ipban every spammer? Impossible, you can only prevent them. I've been working with forums for years.

Thumbs up How Do I Win The Battle of Spamming On My Forum?

Ignorant is a powerful disease.

I am on the winning side - I went to www.stopforumspam.com and read all about forum spam and I followed the instruction and download StopSpammer_v2_3_7 and installed. They are now resting in Pieces not in peace.

I can now have peace. I thank you all for your contributions.

I have to second the Stop Forum Spam modification. Every week, the SFS mod blocks about 400 - 500 spammers from signing up on my site. I looked at the log files on my forum yesterday, in 3 hours 14 spammers had been blocked.

If your using captcha, reCaptcha works a LOT better. Spammers broke the standard captcha phrase a long, long time ago.

Stop Forum Spam add-on + ReCaptcha = stop 99% of those spammers.

Everyone has pretty much covered everything

reCaptcha and an anti spam bot question should do the trick.

This depends on the niche/target audience of your forum and how often you are on the forum youreself (or another admin/mod).
The 2 methods that I have found to be most effective are reCaptcha on registration form and posting form (until they have 5 posts), the second is having posts be moderated for new users, this way at least the spam isn't visible.

Spammers do not care about the niche of your forum, they just want to spam backlinks.

I am well aware of that Kev, and the point I was making is that particular demographics (the end users of the forum) will be far more accepting of particular spam prevention methods.

It is pointless preventing spam if your methods alienate your current and potential members.
