Starting off August with a bang:

...looks like there is a big update just starting to happen in the Google search results this morning. It is super early but based on the initial chatter I am seeing within the SEO community, this one might be a very big one. It is so early that most of the tracking tools aren't even picking it up yet. But the chatter within the community looks to me that this might be a big Google search update.

Why big? Just based on the number of posts and what they are saying within a short time period. It can be some weird Google bug or it can be a new algorithm update that is causing a shift in the core rankings in Google...

The August 2018 update is still rolling out:

Danny Sullivan from Google has confirmed that the latest update is still rolling out. This isn’t unusual, Google’s algo updates usually take anywhere from a few days or even a week or two to fully roll out in the search results.

Sullivan also confirmed that the algo update will not finish rolling out until the middle of next week, so we will see fluctuations in the search results from this core algo change until then...

Notice any changes over the weekend?

...over the weekend it was pretty heavy and but I think it might be starting to slow down in terms of the fluctuations webmasters are noticing. I honestly think this is one of the biggest algorithm shifts we've seen from Google in probably close to over a year. In any event, it does seem, at least over the past 24 hours, to have been starting to slow down...

Originally Barry thought the update just affected medical sites but Danny Sullivan clarified:

It's a broad core update which means it is involving all searches.

Many sites in the diet, nutrition and medical device niches were greatly affected.

Gary Illyes said while on stage at the Search Masters Brazil that the Google Medic update, the core search algorithm update on August 1st, was not designed to target YMYL types of web sites. Pedro Dias, who posted this on Twitter, said he said " It was just a happy coincidence that it also impacted sites in that vertical."...

Anyone notice this new update?

There is new chatter and signals that there may be a Google search algorithm update starting around Wednesday, August 22nd and continuing throughout today. The chatter is not as significant within the SEO community as with the Google Medic Update but many of the tools are showing signs of an Google update too....
