FCC eyes tax on Internet service

Quote:
The Federal Communications Commission is eyeing a proposal to tax broadband Internet service.

The move would funnel money to the Connect America Fund, a subsidy the agency created last year to expand Internet access.

The FCC issued a request for comments on the proposal in April. Dozens of companies and trade associations have weighed in, but the issue has largely flown under the public's radar.

"If members of Congress understood that the FCC is contemplating a broadband tax, they'd sit up and take notice," said Derek Turner, research director for Free Press, a consumer advocacy group that opposes the tax.

Numerous companies, including AT&T, Sprint and even Google have expressed support for the idea.

Every major ISP in this country has the ability to expand their network and access capabilities without an issue.

The problem is they are greedy and don't want to give up their huge paychecks to support network expansion, even though it means more users = more money in the long run.

If the ISPs could make money expanding their networks, they would be doing it already. It's not greed, it's economics. Expansion expenses need to have a reasonable time frame in which they can be recovered.

Since the federal government is running this show, I fully expect:

1. A great deal of the tax money will be sucked up by the bureaucracy needed to "manage" the program.

2. Most of the rest will go to well-connected people regardless of their ability to do the job.

3. Of course, with government funding come a multitude of rules and regulations to be followed (which, of course, will require that the bureaucracy be a perpetual one).

Oh, wouldn't it be beautiful if we all had broadband, even in the most remote locations. Should I hold my ****ing breath. When will we get it? I suppose right after our dirt and gravel roads get paved with the money from the fuel tax, income tax, and property taxes that have been collected to do just that for how many generations now? Oh but it's all good because some politicians nephew gets this high paying job in the roads department, and another politician's buddy gets paid twice that to survey what might be a road, after yet some other politician's friend gets paid three times that to draw up plans for what may be that road. I'm sure AT&T wants to jump on that, it's called a cash cow, money for drawing up plans and making excuses.
