I'm old school

I had one site hitlist.com since 1993. It was the first urban music site online. At it's peak generated 300k a year then the crash hit. Now starting over with rapvideo.com it's been up for two months. First goal is to get it to 10k a month in rev. My thing is find a large niche, grab an easy to remember url, seo your site, publish new content everyday, post everywhere and build an audience, once you get to 5k users a day start approaching advertisers, before then use adsense or an ad network, reinvest your money to grow the site, take metrics on everything (cash flow analysis, ppc roi, etc), market and promote to death, offer something to sell, and finally study your competition and match them/ beat them feature for feature and innovate. You do all that you'll make far more than 1k a month.

Sometimes I can top $500+ a day with my website (see sig). I'd say I make about $8,000-$10,000 a month from it. There is no easy money, I've been dedicating the majority of my time to this website for the last 3 months now. The main things you have to do are:

-Have seed money (you're coing to need at least $5,000 for startup costs)
-Get an original idea (Start a site in a market you can compete in)
-PERFECT your website (as soon as you think it's all done. revise it again)
-Check out all your competitors and learn from them (avoid their mistakes, use their strategies)
-ADVERTISE (market your site, try every type of advertising program)
--Google Adwords (A HUGE profit generator!)
--Overture PPC (Yahoo's version)
--Email marketing (worth a try)
--Banners (Try posting ads on relevant websites)
--Text links (same idea as banners)
--Write articles (Submit to directories and PRWeb)
--Buy targeted traffic (only the quality stuff)
--Submit to directories (get backlinks!)
--Word of mouth (FREE!)
--Forum Marketing (Use that sig space!)
--Affiliate programs (Set up a strong affiliate program with CJ, CB, Clixgalore etc., this is a great way to get free advertising and gain sales!!!)

And this is just the begining..

Great posts, all. Can I suggest a new rule for this thread? No more stating what you earn unless you explain who what when where why. Otherwise it looks like you're spamming your salary for no gain to the readers. Which maybe you are.

Hope this came across OK, no offense intended.

There is a reason people don't state who what when where and why.

It's because given that information a copycat can have a clone up in less than a day. KFC has to post their earnings to the public but you don't see them telling everyone the secret recipe of the herbs and spices do you?

I own 3 large sites that earn me the majority of my income and other than a few close friends around the webmaster community I've NEVER told anyone what they are and never will if I can help it.

That's OK GeorgeB, I'm happy you're good with that. I'm saying it's not helping me to read a post that says:

"$1/4 mil."

It's a waste of pixels.

I'm doing that (on a good month) via website only related activities like AdSense and Affiliate stuff.

However, the real money I make is very my own services (ie being a dating coach). Does that count?

One of my websites (500wordsite.com) makes on average $500-600 month, but is has made over $1000 before in a one month period. I hardly advertise the site (other than adwords and forum signature links) and agree that if you are honest about what you do and the benefits you can offer then you will do well.

You hit the nail on the head with that one. Being honest and getting what YOU OFFER YOUR VISITOR across clearly is essential.
