How servers handle http to https moves?

My site is hosted on a Windows Plesk shared account. Is there a preferred way to handle url changes when moving from http to https? I'm particularity concerned about whether back links pointing to internal pages can be lost during a move to https.

I tried asking my host but their representative didn't know what a back link was. They told me that the search engines control how pages are redirected. Is there a reference with more information that someone can suggest? Thanks so much!

Ya, I'd worry about that, but if you know which pages are targets from the IBLs, then you can redirect to the new pages, or related pages.

That's pretty ridiculous.

No - Google controls how site pages are ranked and listed in the SERPs, but not how pages are redirected. You have to set the redirects.

Try this for a reference: http://searchengineland.com/http-htt...website-246940 It's about a year old, but still looks like a good read.

Who ever you talked to must be confusing Google Search Console (where you can set your preferred domain version) with their responsibility to help you 301 redirect properly.

BTW: The setting in Google Search Console only tells Google which is your preferred version of you domain - not all the other search bots.

I would have it fixed properly and some of the Windows hosting people don't get how important it is to do a 301 permanent redirect and nothing else.

See if this helps - General Settings - Docs at Plesk.com (scroll down to Security. There is a whole paragraph about 301 permanent redirects)

Thanks for the information on how to make the move to https (there's a lot in that article!) and on how to make a permanent, SEO safe redirect on a Plesk system.

I think my pages will correctly redirect now. I discovered that my web.config file was incorrect. Once that was fixed I was able to do a Google fetch with http... and received a 301 moved permanently status with the page moved to the https page. Thanks for your help!
