Is the Google Directory broken?

It seems like it has been all but forgotten. I haven't seen any updates in the Google Directory in at least six months. I know it is pulled from DMOZ, but that doesn't excuse the fact that it isn't being updated. Does anyone know how often the Google Directory is updated?

The Google directory has not been updated "correctly" in over a year. For example, I added a few of my sites to DMOZ about 12 months ago. They were approved and listed fine. They are not showing "normally" in the Google directory.

HOWEVER, if you do a SEARCH on the google directory, my sites come up, but when I click into the category listing page, the sites are not there.

I would not be surprised if we see the directory close shop in the next few months.

I think that's a little pre-mature, but it's definately not on their priority list to keep it updated.

Some time ago in a forum far, far away, I thought I read that Google takes the DMOZ RDF dump and does some editing to it. Ie. their directory isn't a 100% copy of the DMOZ dump they take as the base.

Yes that is understood, the question is why they never update it?

Looks like the Google directory is being updated. The new copy is not available on all servers yet. See

Yea that's old news, just some un-used servers in Europe or something. The regular directory still hasn't been touched.

"Regular directory" is dependent on where you live, those living in Europe are probably seeing the new copy of the directory as the "regular directory". It seems the update is rolling out across other servers too, it just takes time. It also seems the PageRank shown in the directory is newer than that shown in the toolbar.

For the record, the Google Directory has now finally been updated from the latest DMOZ dump.
