The most important factor for an eye-catching blog depends upon the quality of the image you are uploading in your blog.

canva.com is great for using free images and have the ability to edit the images. I have a paid account there for my blog team to edit pictures I create or they create them for the blog. Just started doing this 2 weeks ago. Still learning more about this site as well.

I'm a paid member but that's because I added my editor to my account to create or edit my images.

I still have to use the free images or can buy ones at a cheap price to use myself. What I like is that I can feel like a professional designer and use an existing image and tweak it. I've even uploaded my own images and scaled them down to insert into one of the free template images.

You should remember following things before creating a template
1-Do not over do things, means try to make things simple as much as you can.
2-Make a User-Friendly UI
3-Reduce the amount of plugins which you are going to use in your template

There are many free images library source available online. But if you really want to make great blog templates. Images won't work.. Though you have ask two questions in one question.

Here is my answer for you:

1. If you want to have great eye catchy blog templates. Learn adobe photoshop which is used by professional graphic designers. You can design great mockup and then develop a blog.

2. It will take time to learn photoshop but you can check tutorials on youtube for learning photoshop. You can also join communities and check profiles for web design ideas on behance for inspirations.

3. If you don't know coding, you can try divi wordpress themes which is very simple to design any kind of layout by simply drag and drop
