Compressing my data BEFORE insertion into database

I just wanted to run this by you guys before I head full on into it.

I'm dealing with enormous amounts of data and I'm trying to think of better ways to store, access and back it up.

I'm thinking of compressing the data before insertion into the db. So far it works great, only takes up a fraction of the space and restores quiet nicely.

I'm just wondering if I may be in for some unforeseen problems with storing and access data in this way.

Any thoughts?

IMO its a compromise between storage and processing. Looking at the pros and cons on average I'd say skip the compression and just make sure the data gets processed in as little time as possible.
