What do you guys think of XexForo ?

VB has been biting the dust since it was bought by IB ..

the former lead programmer already has a slicker forum software.

What do you guys think ?

It looks good from first appearances but I think what would make me switch from vB to anything else would be better Social Integration, Robust ACP, Adsense Integration, Sitemap, Security and out of the box SEO.

It will also be interesting to see if they can develop an active mod and skinning community.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of the look. It looks too different for me. I love the small AJAX effects and the social aspect of it, though. I would probably buy it's not too expensive.

Its still a work in progress ... it will be interesting to see what happens

with the first Gold release and the pricing behind it ... its a welcomed

addition to the forum software market where they have lagged behind

in innovation for years.

While I agree that innovation has not been embraced by forum software in the past it's not something I look for when shopping for forum software.

Personally I want a robust forum solution that I can control at the click of a link or two without too much hassle. I want full control over forums, sub-forums, guests and members so I can root out abhorrent behavior without it affecting my legitimate regular users.

I also think it's imperative a forum software dev. have great forum support and an active mod community which I think vBulletin has. Last but not least, I want Security and vB excels on this point as well.

Yes you can argue that blogs, CMS, Social Bookmark Integration, etc., took forever and are well behind the curve but these to me are extensions of what I want from a forum, not the main reason to have a forum.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the more you add to any software, the more room you leave for someone to enter in under questionable circumstances and mess with your site. I used to work support for a major phpnuke website and most of what I fielded were queries on issues with newer versions as well as major issues from nuke platinum users who had to have all the bells and whistles. Most of these users were persuaded to move to Ravennuke which didn't have all the bells and whistles but had a very secure and mostly bug free platform.

Even though this new forum software does have some promise, I'd be very interested to see what the final version offers. I'm willing to bet that it won't have everything for everyone and if it does it will take ages to develop it only to run under a heavy patching schedule due to major vulnerabilities.
