It's good to have profile link only from good reputation site not with bad neighbourhood sites and it should followed by those site guidelines.

Forum profile back link doesn't hurt your SEO, in turn it helps in generating back links. If the forum site is irrelevant to your business niche you may suffer then.

You don't spam a site just because they have profiles. Exact reason why you can't create a profile on my forum without upgrading - many follow the above post.

You must PARTICIPATE in the site and not just create a profile. A profile with no participation will hurt your rankings as the so called backlink as you call it will be degraded by the search engines.
i agree A profile with no participation will hurt your rankings

Maybe read this blog post but I don't feel like adding my in this thread about profile backlinks. I've banned hundreds of members on this forum when I was a super moderator on here for this tactic.

I am either a moderator or an admin on a few forums.
  1. They all detest profile spam. i.e. spam your profile instead of filling out the profile properly and you will be banned.
  2. Some have profiles are hidden from the search engines thanks to those that do #1.
  3. Some even hide your signature from the search engines.

On the positive side,
If you join forums related to what you do and participate properly then that can turn into friendships, visitors to your site and a way to build your reputation as an authority on your chosen subject.

How to you think the well know SEOs, bloggers and marketers got their start?

BTW, We do have some famous well known bloggers who have joined this forum and used to post a lot. That was many many years ago but everyone has to start somewhere till there business get's going or they educate themselves so much or a certain field that they become the experts that we read there content everyday to help us out.

Some members here don't use there real name or even link to there websites on here but they could actually be one of the well known bloggers we visit the blogs everyday or purchase products from. Forums is where you start out. I was a moderator on Proboards.com (Global Moderator) doing support on there for free in the year 2000 for a few years but then I got into the online money making world and over the years taught myself things and learned new things on forum's. Heck I was a super moderator on here for a long time as well. I love helping people out more them helping my own self out or even my own blogs. lol

If it wasn't for me being addicted to forums in 2000, I would most likely not be this knowledgeable in the online world. I was scammed before online and I used to blog about the sneaky ways these con artists steal your money and basically feed you crap you can find by searching Google. 6 years ago I subscribed to a couple of well known SEO blogs and started to learn SEO myself but I am not an expert and never said online I am but I have common sense and the power to find answers online from reputable websites. Hence why I get mad on this forum when I see members replying with garbage or lack any details behind there comment.

Another forum I have been a member for the past few years that I post on every few months has signatures disabled and you even can not add your URL in your forum profile. They did not want people on the forum to get backlinks. The people who come to the forum need help on certain things and there to learn new things. That forum is no doubt useful because no spammers are on there. Members can't even post links in replies till they have 50 quality posts. You all lucky V7N has not cracked down on certain rules we have here.

Profile links have very little to no impact on SEO. Yes it might impact a little if you have a profile link on a non relevant website. (ex- tech site link on a musical site profile).

No it will not.. But create this kind of forum profiles only for getting backlinks is a spam.. So do participate into the forum on regular basis is more good for improving backlinks.

Care to mention why you disagree? It's nice to hear opinions on this forum so other members know not to do this.

It will not hurt your long-term search engine optimization goals. Adding a link in your forum signature is good because it helps to increase awareness and let the world know online your site is in fact in existence.
