America's first suburb reaches 60

For those among us who accept the suburb as a way of life, it may come as a complete shock that the whole experience is only 60 years old. It all started in 1952.

Quote:
Almost 60 years ago, a planned community embodied the hopes and prosperity of America. Now, it represents a more realistic picture of the American experience. The BBC investigates Levittown, Pennsylvania, as part of a year-long series.

In 1960, BBC journalist Ludovic Kennedy travelled to Levittown, Pennsylvania in advance of the Nixon-Kennedy election. Reporting for Panorama, Kennedy's on-the-scene accounts provided an ideal perspective from which to measure the concerns of a fast-changing nation.

So did you find that interesting?

I don't think the suburb is generally a good solution when applied to the whole world, since it occupies a lot of space and more space is what we humans need right now, to sustain planet's huge population. I'm sorry but the suburb will not give equal space for everyone to live in.

I pretty much agree with you. I am not sure that the current method of building them is good for this country in the future. A mixed use neighborhood would be a lot more condusive to walking or biking. That would trim fat and save oil.

Hold that thought.

Suburbs here have been pretty good, generally speaking.
They provide more space per person than living in the city.
They allow people to live in close proximity to the cities (which contain the jobs), but still not be subjected to the trappings of large cities.
It's cheaper to live in the suburbs.
And, so far, they haven't had the effect of gutting the cities either. There are still plenty of folks who prefer city living to suburb living.

I have warm and pleasant attitude to the idea of suburbs as well.
We have an opportuinty to be closer to the nature and calm way of life.
The speedy life in the cities is like a drug for us and thanks to suburbs where we can think about the life itself, but not work and so on.
