The warmup forecast the weather specialists promised at the beginning of this month has not materialized. They've adjusted that warmer-than-normal weather to start mid April.

I think the residents on the west cost are hogging the warmth. Time to let it go!

Now, if I can only figure out how to win the lottery, I'd make sure I'm going to be a hell of a lot closer to the equator for most of the winter, and then make my way back here sometime in early April.

On a separate note, we're getting closer to the 1000 post mark in this thread.

At this rate, all we need is another 99,038 more posts to reach our target.

99036 to go!

Ah, gotta change the subject.

I'm seeing more electric cars on the roads these days. Of course there are more hybrid vehicles too, both of which are becoming more affordable and more popular. It's nice to see the price point on purchase on such vehicles being lower than a while ago, but they're still thousands of dollars more that the comparable gas models.

That said, even with electric cars being more affordable, there is still a long payback period of maybe 10 years? I know it's said electric vehicles are better for the environment, but I still can't see paying all that extra money for a car that can only go 200kms (at the best of conditions weather wise) between charges.

Some studies show electric cars cost around $500 per year in electrical costs, vs $1200 in gas. That's an American study, so our costs up here would be more.

In reality, I would still need a second car that runs on gas if I ever want to go on a long trip. Sure I could rent a car for that long trip, but that wouldn't be cheap.

That said, I haven't even thought about the feeling of dread when trying to reach a destination with the EV charge at, or below a quarter, and then having to scour the neighborhoods, or searching out a charging station. Worse yet, in a snow storm.

I know some vehicles (the Tesla S extended range model) can get up to 500kms on a charge, which is nice to have. But that long range version, with a few extras thrown in, can cost over $60k CAD, so I can't see buying one.

Yes, there are much cheaper EVs out there, but then we have to set the bar much lower in terms of distance it can travel on one charge.

The tech is much improved over prior years. They might be fine for urban dwellers.

Imo, they are not quite ready for prime time.

Of course if the Socialist in Washington win and have their way, I'll be eating soy steaks and using the gas from that to boost my 'green' car.

Better yer just kill me and bury me face down. And you know why.

If I did not have the rentals an electric might make sense for me but not for the wife who drives the Eastern half of the state.

I won't know until later, but it does look like it was a good day.

For all the US stocks it was my best day in a very long time!

A nothing day for an ADR stock and our 1 CA stock. The latter of which is strange since they do a lot of business in the US.

While I don't own any but am watching a couple, the cannabis CA stocks actually went down.

So are you seriously considering an Elec or hybrid?

It was a good day - about .65% increase.

I was watching cannabis stocks a while back - but the swings were way too much for me. It really depends on when you got in, and when you got out. But with some stores set to open here on April 1st, anything could happen. The day they are scheduled to open suits me just fine.

I used to be a new car guy. That has changed. The last new car I bought was about 10 years ago. The kids use that one now, and since then, I've only bought used (no more than 3 years old) with the current one a low-mileage two year old. And, I love this one. I could never have seen myself spend retail price for this car new. But considering it had only 16,000 km on it (10,000 miles), it was practically new and I saved a lot.

In the mean time, over the next few years, I'm going to do some research into the used market of hybrid and EV cars. Looking for what to expect with a two-year old, for example. How many of those cars are selling, at what age, at what price (depreciated) and what kind of maintenance can be expected after purchase.

I expect the EV battery to depreciate in terms of charge, output and holding power as the years go on. And, yes, in the case of having to replace an EV battery, I'm sure it would be a ton of $$.

For me the wheels thing is pretty simple. No one is making a small PU truck any more and I don't care for the height and size of even the smallest they are selling. So I guess I am driving this one until one of us dies. It should be good for another 50-60K miles and I only drive about 6K per year.

As you update your thoughts about hybrid and EV I would love it if you shared them.

As I understand it the battery replacement is the biggest issue and expense.

An interesting side not to that; the old nicad batteries for my cordless tools did lose capacity over time and reduced output while using but the newer Lithium batteries have held up much better. I am way past the point, by years, where I expected problems. I am fairly sure the newer model EVs use lithium with a couple of sub-types.

While speaking about EVs and their batteries, maybe get in on some Lithium or Cobalt mineral stocks?

Of quality, most likely. Though I have no problems 10-15 is is probably a best case.

My maternal genes say I may go longer.

Bad day on our markets. Everything gained in yesterday's wonderful trading, is gone - AND THEN SOME!

Wasn't quite that bad for us; about 80% of gains gone. Just proves the over-corrects in both directions.

A beautiful but somewhat chilly day outside. The sunshine is nice.
