Link farming is one of the black hat seo techniques which involves in exchanging number of website links in a page. In link farm, group of websites are hyperlinked with each other.

Whereas directory submission is totally different if you will do it in the right way. It is helpful if you will submit your link in good neighborhood, niche and high PR websites but donít go for reciprocal option for directory submission because it is also one type of link farm where directory site will ask to put their link on your website and after that they will put our link on their website.

Link farm is a place where anyone can add their links and exchange links. I don't think directory is a link farm but you should choose the perfect category and high pr domain when you are submitting your information to different directory.

Just echoing what everyone said so far. Link farms are kind of "quid pro quo" services where links are exchanged. The problem is that you have links pointing back and fourth without any correlation. The directories on the other hand are organized by topics. They also do not require link backs so there is no link exchange (favor) involved.

Links from reputable directories can be helpful to overall SEO but they do not have the same value as in the past.

Directory submission is not link farming. But while submitting please make sure that you are only submitting to good directory (high PR) with proper categories. Otherwise there will be penalization from Google You have to remember that link building should be natural. If any abnormalities are found in link building then there is a high chance of getting penalized from Google.

Directory submission is one of the good link link building techniques in search engine optimization process. Using directory submission your site will get good back links from high page rank sites and improves your site link popularity automatically. Submitting your site on do-follow directories is always a good practice for your site promotion.

It is not easy as past. You should check every page and directory before adding your link

Directory submission seems like spamming. Most directories are not human edited. Many are selling links. So if you are getting link from dmoz then it is ok otherwise it will not work.

Directory submission is not link farming as many people above have said so, just make sure that the category you are submitting your link in is indexed in google and that it does not have many pages like more than 10 or so, because with pages more than that your link will appear in the last and most of those last pages are never indexed by google so it will be just a waste of time for you to submit a link in that website.

Submit your link in only good website with good pr, alexa and good serp ranking. Most importantly stay away from fast approval directories.

Submitting your site in a high PR directory it's not harmfull, you have to be aware of those directories with rare link farming and no original content or unusefull.

My advice would be that don't try the typical "Get +7000 links on directories for free". Always try to do your link submission manually and always to well considered directories like dmoz, yahoo directory (which is very expensive), etc...

Yes directory submissions are basically FFA( free for all ) links, accessible by everyone, but choosing the correct category and high PR websites can give you benefit.

Please break this down for us who do not want the "basically FFA". Can you give us the technical in depth analysis and deductions?

How does having high PR not make a site a link farm?

How does submitting to the correct category affect a site being a link farm or not?
