D-Day For Internet

Doom-filled warnings arrive from AT&T this week. The company says that without substantial investment in network infrastructure, the Internet will essentially run out of bandwidth in just two short years.

Blame broadband, says AT&T. Decades of dealing with the trickle of bandwidth consumed by voice and dialup modems left AT&T twiddling its thumbs. The massive rise of DSL and cable modem service in the 2000s has had AT&T facing a monstrous increase in the volume of data transmissions. And that's set to increase another 50 times between now and 2015. That's enough, says AT&T, to all but crash the system.

I think we all knew this was going to happen some day but internet hits full capacity. I see there must be ways around this as AT&T said but would that just not send the world back so far if the internet back if it got the reset button

Surely the infrastructure will get upgraded? here i the UK we are now getting 50mb cable broadband, and i've heard rumours of up to 200mb. They get those speeds in other countries. ADSL seems to be limited in the UK by the local telephone exchange annd what they can handle, and the quality of the wiring to your house etc.. but i think eventually it will all be fibre optic.. or better..

They will simply limit everyone's "high speed"... Its being done already...

I am still on dialup and was considering satellite internet which is going to be available here shortly under a provincial plan to get everyone in my area high speed at a reasonable rate. When I read the fine print I saw the major drawback of this plan... they are going to limit everyone to 400 Meg of BW per day.

As far as I am concerned, they can keep it because I can get 300 on dialup... Besides, I'm not really in any hurry

The end to all bandwidth? I find this impossible as companies constantly upgrade their bandwidth to accommodate new users.

What if they restricted the amount of bandwidth each person could use that would be horrible for us webmasters

That's funny.

Yes, the bandwidth will increase that's for sure in the future.
People will come up with pretty good compression algorithms and/or the network infrastructure will be redesigned totally.
