I would say below the fold (the imaginary line before you start scrolling) as Google will give your site less weight for the more ads you have above the fold.

In my opinion the skyscrappers and the right hand side or left hand side square box of dimension 250*250 are good.

I'd test out what Google is recommending.

Quote:
As a rule of thumb, wider ad sizes tend to outperform their taller counterparts, due to their reader-friendly format. Readers absorb information in "thought units," several words at a time. Wider sizes let them comfortably read more text at a glance without having to skip a line and return to the left margin every few words, as they'd have to with a narrower ad.

If positioned well, wide ad sizes can increase your earnings significantly. The sizes we've found to be the most effective are the 336x280 Large Rectangle, the 300x250 Medium Rectangle, the 728x90 Leaderboard, and the 160x600 Wide Skyscraper. Keep in mind that while these ad sizes typically perform well, you should use the size that best complements your pages. For more information about these ad sizes, see our guide to ad sizes. It's better to add one recommended ad unit than two smaller ad units next to each other.

Tip for making the most of a little ad space: Try one of our streamlined link units, shown below. These sizes are versatile enough to fit in locations normal ads don't.

Suggest you experiement with different placement positions to see which formats work best for you and in which position. If you have a wordpress site there are any number of plug-ins available to help with adsense (and other ad) placements including random positioning within posts.

Ads are good but over Ads are not good for websites. So put limited ads on your website otherwise if you will keep excessive Ads than there can be possibility of increasing Bounce rate. The best place is to keep on either Top or Right-top on page where ads are visible directly.

first of all as NRBaghela said dont use excessive amount of ads i prefer using 2 ad box one in the side bar and one between post which converts better for everyone, and there's a program called clickheat install and it generates a report of where your visitors clicks the most so it should give you a fair idea

You should experiment with several places and discover which ones are better.

I think that probably the best place to put ads is to put it inside the content. It really should help you to generate more clicks and to make money.

Exactly, I'm still experimenting. Found 336x280 units are performing better than 300x250 units in my site in a certain position. I suggest you should do it too.

From my little experiment I've been running I've found that a 300*250 square in your side works and a leaderboard or the banner can work under the article title and maybe one at the end of the article

Ads works best above the fold. Use 728x90 header or 300x250 ads within content or sidebar. Experiment and see which works well for you.

I've always been fond of...

1. A banner ad, top of the page

2. 1-2 Sidebar ads

3. If only 1 sidebar ad, I'd put one in the actual content or a text ad somewhere.

Best as spots are below the Navbar (728x90), Sidebar top (300x250 or 160x600), and at the end of content (336x280).
You can test other ad-sizes according to your site layout/theme in those spots.
NOTE: donot put more than 2 above the fold ads (recommended is 1)

I have 6 blogs and all of them I earn more money in banner that is in the top page, between Head and content. But insert only one code.

I would suggest to place text link ads within the content of your site,so that chances are more to get clicked by the user but if you have less number of visitors then also there are chances to get banned by adsense too.

Try one ad in content and one in side bar. You also have to try what type works best like image ads or text to see how they do.

It depends on your page design. You should try different places and check which positions work best.

Generally the best places are 728x90 banner on the top of the page, 160x600 on the right or left side of the page and at the beginning of the article
