Well know that you heard from the wannabe SEOers....

Creating profiles for backlinks as many self proclaimed gurus preach is nothing more than SPAM and yes it will hurt you.

You don't spam a site just because they have profiles. Exact reason why you can't create a profile on my forum without upgrading - many follow the above post.

You must PARTICIPATE in the site and not just create a profile. A profile with no participation will hurt your rankings as the so called backlink as you call it will be degraded by the search engines.

Creating profiles on forums and the likes just for the sake of getting backlinks is pure spam. As mentioned above, you need to participate and offer valuable posts in the community. And yes it is indexable by SE's, so whenever you participate in conversations and have a signature, rest assured you are getting backlinks without spamming. You may also want to think of other ways to get backlinks aside from profiles, that way you will have link diversity and a bigger chance of ranking. Goodluck.

Having backlinks in profile is no use and it will not hurt the SEO in anyways. Neither your search engine rankings will increae nor it will decrease.Only if you just want to increase the count of backlinks you could do that. Instead, i would suggest participating in blog commenting and forums. This way you will create an identity and can also promote the website.

If the profile link is from irrelevant website, it definitely hurts SEO.

It won't but you will hardly get any benefit of it. Instead you should focus on some good quality back links from relevant websites or content.

Create profile backlink from high quality forums like this forum and participate to discuss and provide value will get more value for ranking. Besides, you should make more blog comment and social bookmarking. I think that is the safest way for SEO.

Spam is Spam and all spam will hurt you. Creating "profile links" for the purpose of backlinks with no participation is Spam.

Bullchit! Link is a link and it does not matter if the site is so called relevant or not. You idiots don't get it - that is how Google knows you nothing but spammers.

Google knows "Natural Links" can show any place and not just on so called related sites.

This is more Bad SEO advice that you got from one of those so called SEO blogs.

It means you participate in sites and not just create profiles. Creating profiles on sites just for a so called backlinks is nothing more than spam!

If you can't participate in the site then don't create any account at all.

Let's put it another way...

What if you owned a popular site that allowed profiles and comments. Would you seriously want 10,000 accounts created on your site for the sole purpose of those people getting a so called backlink ?

Put yourself in the shoes of these website owners and you would think different. Bandwidth cost money, lame and fake user accounts cost resources... Would you be willing to pay out money or lose money for useless fake accounts ?

You know the best time I had when I was a super moderator on this forum before I left my position was banning members who created multiple accounts on here and the ones I spotted as here to post for backlinks.

I banned people with a smile on my face.
