Matt Cutt's Resigned From Google - Wish him the best

A few weeks ago, Matt Cutts resigned from Google to go full time at the place he did a 6 month stint with after taking a leave of absence from Google. I've been following his news and a little sad he is gone but he is doing a very good thing in his new role.

Here is his announcement post. I suspect he will still post on his blog from time to time but it will not be about Google/SEO no more.

Quote:
A few months ago, I took a leave of absence from Google to do a stint with the US Digital Service. A lot of people know about the US Digital Service because they helped rescue the healthcare.gov website. But you might not realize that the US Digital Service has helped veterans get their health benefits, brought bug bounties to the federal government, and helped the IRS protect taxpayer info.

Read that. I feel that Matt has been gone for so long now, it's kind of anticlimactic. I like the videos he did on SEO though.

My favorite Matt Cutts moment: doing back link research to find a competitor had spammed his blog for links.

As for me, I would have to say that I enjoyed watching his Google Webmaster Videos. His videos were very, very helpful and useful in learning about Search Engine Optimization. Reading can get a little old and stale after awhile and his videos, in my opinion, were a nice change up since they were generally, short, concise and informative.

I wish him all the best in his new endeavors.

His role in Google was a strange one.. always felt he was given the task of spreading disinformation about SEO.

I would have to agree...I really don't understand his 'cult' status.

I wonder how much his leaving has to do with the fact that Google has kind of got a handle on SEO at this point, in terms of making it very hard to fraudulently create backlinks that actually work. After the many animal updates, a lot of SEO-related sites are struggling to do anything except produce meaningful content and get meaningful backlinks - there isn't really as much need these days for a Matt Cutts, imo.

Don't tell John Mueller that. He's kind of taken over explaining Google to people.

I guess they only need a small fraction of his total reach to swallow everything he says.. said, to achieve that.

And the big names in SEO aren't going to be too critical of him or Google - why bite the hand that feeds?

But as you and I know, behind the scenes professional SEO's have a deep mistrust of him and anything Google says.

They've led us down too many false paths.. and the occasional trap.

Yeah, I always thought of him as CFO - Chief Falsification Officer. Things he said were not true across the board. E.g. people can and still do get away with building spammy & irrelevant links. I always felt most of the things Matt (or anyone else) Google says or will continue to say about SEO will be from a perspective of discouraging SEO & encouraging Adwords. But they are a company with revenue targets after all. They have to make money so they have to do it.

Ha!

That did make me laugh.

And it's true about the spammy links.. I don't have much of a clue what's happening in SEO anymore, I dropped out of the loop a few years ago, but I'm still irked that sites can get good results with black hat methods.

Don't be too irked...it's all a big game after all, don't forget that. At any moment all the white hat methods in the world could come tumbling down if/when Google decide that you need to pay a subscription to them just to appear anywhere on the serps! The day will come.

I get irked that people drive at 50 in 30mph zones...far more worthy of my emotions I believe.

Aye, I remember a lot of white hat methods we used.. even being encouraged to use by Google..

...then suddenly overnight they become black hat, and years of ethical work vanishes in a puff of smoke.

It irked me so much I gave up on SEO and started buying traffic instead. Life / business is much better now.

can anyone give a good example of where matt claimed false info? the examples given where by a black hat method worked, surely this isn't matts fault or him claiming anything false but instead others have worked out how to play the system?

There's plenty of times when Google outright lied about SEO..

But check this out..

A few months earlier he denied this, until Danny Sullivan caught him out.

I will post more examples (lots more) when I get time.
