Here are some key things to consider:

What are the highest volume keywords that relate to your site?
What are the keywords that will be the best converting for your site?
Can you build compelling content related to your keywords?
Is your content sufficiently unique?
Can you get other site owners who have sites related to your site (and selected keywords) to link to you using your keywords?
Have you addressed the long tail?
If you do everything right with keyword selection, content development, and getting links to your site, can you get to the first page of the search results?

What keywords are your target audience searching for. It's no use targeting a keyword that has high search, if your target audience isn't searching it. For instance, if you sell digital cameras, you won't get much reward for being on page 1 of "digital camera". But, if you're on page 1 for "Digital Camera Sale" or "Sony Digital Camera Sale", you will convert more traffic. Don't look only at high traffic. Look at relevance.

Google keyword suggestion tool will definitely help you to choose best keyword for your website.

firstly you can do divide your keyword in two part long tail & short tail & select your best keyword which will generate business.

mainly thing is which keyword will give you business is most important so be careful during chose keywords because of importance.

now think twice dose it really generate business after getting on rank because some time we spend lots of efforts & time but after achieving result we don't get any business.

1.First think about your user what type of words they used to find your website, and make list.
2.Analyze your competitors website to find what keywords they are used and make a list
3.Now put all these keywords in keyword suggestion tools and select the best one which have low competition and high search volume.

Put your one related keyword in search engine, and study some competitor website and look what keywords they are using. If you have a deep look on at least top 10 site, you will get your answer.

I don't know if you're actually bragging your skill to get PR 5 or asking for an advice for keywords, but I think you should work on first with your market so that you'll know how or what keyword targets you will list down.

the best way is to run adwords then choose the keywords that actually convert to sales

a close second is to use Market Samurai and look for keywords that get a good quantity of search yet don't have too much competition to actually get some placement. I also look at how much the adwords bidding is, assuming if people will pay a lot for it then it probably is converting.

I just cleaned up this thread with a lot of posts stating to use google keyword tool and of course they did not backup there response to well.

If you are going to repeat what someone has suggested already, please form an opinion why the OP should use the tool.

Google Adwords keyword tool doesn't show competitors. 90% keywords which I use, I spied on competitors in semrush, others invented myself. GKT can be used for the popularity of the query, but semrush also have the same functions, so I disused the GIT.

Choosing keywords for your website is an interesting process. Think about what words your potential customers do a search on Google to find you. It is usually more than one word. People search Google for general non-specific terms. The locations are great search terms to include.

Any keyword can become your best keyword if you focus on the Keyword Density of a particular page, the no. of backlinks you build to that page keeping the keyword as the anchor text.

Depends on what kind of keyword you want.

But for me basically you want keyword that have high search and it is a buyer keyword.
E.g. buy <product brand>

Sometimes you find keywords that just ambiguous whether you can use it or not. At that point of time other than trying it, there is no other way I guess.
