Thumbs down Was Jesus Married?

A small fragment of faded papyrus contains a suggestion that Jesus may have been married. The fragment, with just eight lines of text on the front and six lines on the back, is from a fourth-century dialogue, written in the Coptic language, between Jesus and his disciples. In it, Jesus speaks of “my wife,” according to Harvard professor Karen L. King, who discovered the fragment.

What do you think? Was Jesus married?

Interesting. The article makes it seem like he would have had to have been married in order to have a female disciple, however I don't think there is any question that he did indeed have female disciples whether he was married or not.

I would say not also as lets face it, he already knew his path which was to preach for a little while and then be killed, so it really wouldn't have been fair on whoever if he got married.

Taking into account that Jesus spoke quite often using examples so that everyone could follow and who is to say that whilst addressing his followers, this was not to mean them as his wife though not litterally.

It's the typical religious syndrome of someone reading a verse from the bible and stating it means one thing, without reading the before and after so as to get a better understanding of what is meant.

Just my 2 cents..

The belief that Jesus was not married is one reason priests in the Catholic Church must remain celibate and are not allowed to marry.
The real reason lies back in the Middle Ages (I'll make it simple):

The Church had much land
They gave this land as fiefdoms to their subordinates
fiefs could be inherited
The Church didn't want to loose it's land
Easiest fix - "Jesus wasn't married, so you aren't allowed as well"

Back to topic

Does it really matter? I'm pretty sure that the Catholic Church will not change anything. Not with the current Pope or with the next one.

If they change anything they could lose power and money. The Church loves power and money. And it's way to good to sweep problems under the next table.
