Photoshop is used for pixel based graphics design, and Illustrator is used for vector based graphics design. For example, you should edit photos or create digital paintings with Photoshop, and design logos/game character with Illustrator.

Illustrator is perfect for vector images and making logos text. If you want to add blur or hide someone in a photo you should use photoshop.

If you're after quick graphics and photo editing, use Photoshop

If you're after logos and vector arts, use Illustrator

Bottom line: if you're just going to make promotional banners - photoshop will do.

I'm using both but i'm don't have a mad skill to set myself and use Illustrator when i do design work.

Maybe is personal preference. My mom loves photoshop because she has used it for a long time and now understands how to use every single feature. For her trying a new program she will be clueless for awhile and it will take longer to finish 1 task at a time.

Photoshop works with raster images. As a raster image is enlarged, the image will show degradation from pixellation. The higher the degree of enlargement, the more the pixellation degrades the image.

Illustrator works with vector images. Extreme enlargements of vector graphics don't suffer from the same pixellation effect that raster images do. Since each element is drawn from its vectors rather than expanded from a bitmap, the image scales and doesn't degrade as it's enlarged.

I think you can't go without either of them. They are both excellent for certain processes. I use photoshop for all my images and compositions. Photoshop has come a long way with a lot of intuitive and advanced features for manipulating and enhancing photos. Illustrator is just a beast for creating vector graphics. I use it to create artwork that needs to be printed, like labels and brochures. I then output the files to tiff or pdf format.
