Of the Congress, by the Congress, for the Congress

Washington Post releases unprecedented report on congressional earmarks

Quote:
Thirty-three members of Congress have steered more than $300 million in earmarks and other spending provisions to dozens of public projects that are next to or near the lawmakers' own property, according to a Washington Post investigation. Under the ethics rules Congress has written for itself, this is both legal and undisclosed.

In the first review of its kind, The Post analyzed public records on the holdings of all 535 members and compared them with earmarks members had sought for pet projects, most of them since 2008. The process uncovered appropriations for work in close proximity to commercial and residential real estate owned by the lawmakers or their family members. The review also found 16 lawmakers who sent tax dollars to companies, colleges or community programs where their spouses, children or parents work as salaried employees or serve on boards.
Nice work if you can get it.

Well, how goes the old proverb - it's only a crime if you get caught

I think many politicians are involved in illegal stuff. Why? Because they can and they hardly ever get caught. Even if they get caught, almost nothing happens. Only a few headlines and one month later, everyone forgets about it.

I am thinking that today we are living in a modern feudalism with lords, vassals, and fiefs.

A good book to read is "De l'esprit des lois" or in English "The Spirit of the Laws" by Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu

You can find the book on Amazon.

Here's a nice morality tale, congress style:

* State Senator gets to Capitol Hill in DC.
* 2 months later his wifes employer gives her a promotion that roughly triples her income, raisng it by about $200k
* On the next round of earmarks he requests a $1 million earmark for his wifes employer and gets shut down.
* His response is to say in retrospect he shoulda had a different senator try to get the money for his wifes employer.

Thank God he's no longer in the Senate. [Unfortunately he has 1 more year in the White House.]

Amazing part, at DP I quoted the Dallas Morning News story that told the tale during the 08 election... and the Obama groupies [Hope and Change!!!] responded by sticking their fingers in their ears and reciting mantras... since after all, he talked a great deal about his disdain for earmarks and political corruption. [Yes we CAN!!!]

Lord help those that conflate his rehearsed propaganda with "truth". [We've always been at war with Eastasia.]

Some lawmakers direct tax dollars to institutions tied to relatives

Quote:
Sixteen members of Congress have directed federal tax dollars to companies, colleges and community groups where their relatives work as salaried employees, lobbyists or board members, according to an examination of federal disclosure forms and local public records by The Washington Post.
