Yes you can add your keyword in forums, but every forum has it's own criteria.
1st you should target your niche relevant forum, signup there and see guidelines first over there than build trust by posting and replying other threads.
After building trust upon moderator or admin, you can use your keyword in relevant niche thread with targeted post, where the actual need is of your keyword.
Sometime you make external hyperlink on that keywords as a other website reference.
Hope so it'll be very helpful for you.

So, you're saying, in the beginning, try to be nice. And then, begin to nudge your way into good standing with Mods and Admins, and then begin the spamming??

Business 101 - Give enough people what they want and you will get what you want!

It's a shame that 90% of this industry has it assbackwards..

Most links on sites that expect spam content, like forums and blog comments, has no follow attributes. It's still useful as it can send traffic to your site, that is if people find your posts interesting and helpful.

They use no follow attribute because they know 97% of the idiots think it means the search engines don't follow and no link juice is passed. It's funny as hell what these people believe and that's why it is so easy to outrank most people.

It's like saying I am not going to advertise in the yellow pages because nobody uses phone books anymore .... lmao!!!! Yes they do!

I think you should target you customer or audience rather than getting links from any forums...
