What you prefer? Reseller or VPS?

Hello!
I wonder when you try to start your own hosting selling business as web developer/web designer what do you prefer to have reseller account or VPS?

I would prefer VPS or dedicated server for hosting selling business as:

1. If you advertise through email or have a large contact mailing list, you will need a VPS
2. If you want to develop a custom hosting environment, or want to install something which is not compatible with our shared servers, then you will want a VPS.
3. If you have multiple email users working from the same office.

If I need to provide hosting for my client alone, VPS would be a good option. But if you are planning to start a web hosting company go for reseller

But when you start providing hosting services for the clients you need to remember about support options. Providing hosting services that is more then just having VPS.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and guess that you sell/provide one, or both.

If you have a lot of clients or know you will over time, investing more money into dedicated server I think is the best way to go. You can always invest more money into upgrading the server to make the performance better or add more space.

Raise your developer price a little if you plan on hosting the client with you. That extra fee you can say is for maintaining there website to be online always and for continuous support as you will be supporting your clients needs for the term of there contract.

Make it known up front that if your client ends there contract with you that you will give them X amount of time to get a web host so you can migrate there website to there new web host. Charge them a 1 time fee for you to migrate there site to there host as a last minute profit off the client who is leaving you.

Perhaps you can get idea's off what I just mentioned.... which is what I was hoping for.

Seems self-serving.

Moving from a Reseller to a VPS is only recommended if the you need more control of the server. For example, if you need additional software or to make modifications that are not allowed on a shared server.

VPS beats Reseller Hosting in almost all aspects except the price and the fact that it is not easy to learn to manage. If you have zero experience with VPS then go for Reseller honestly

I think it is quite simple really.

If you are new to hosting, then you would go the Reseller route (especially if your startup budget is small).

But if you are experienced and prefer root access to VPS/Dedicated so you can migrate websites yourself without having to request your provider to do it then VPS/Dedicated is the way to go.

For any other reasons, I think it would just be personal preference.
