Your competitor have keywords on their domain. In that particular search term you want to beat them, this is possible. But there is a factor called domain age.Check the domain age of your competitor. Analise the domain, see what kind of links they have collected. And keep working on your website. It may take some time but collecting quality links will bring your desired result.

It could take some time so just keep working on your backlinks, also you may want to check your on site seo, make sure your keywords are in your tittle, h1, links and so on.

You need a ton of backlinks with the keyword anchor text in order to beat him.

Do a backlink research of your competitors and yours. Also you check your and your competitors SEO rank here http://www.woorank.com/ . I kind of like that site.

Although having keywords as parts of domain names can be considered as a positive option while doing SEO for websites, but by checking out Google pages, you will find thousands of sites outperforming the keyword rich domains. The impacts might not seem that significant you know. Links are the essential strength in this connection and the better links your site gathers the better ranks it will receive and ultimately defeating the competitors.

Check that you have done your on page correctly, Your content is not copied from some where, check that your site doesn't have any broken links, check the w3c error, and off course analyze your competitors website as well, like from where they getting links. and start putting your links there...Good luck.

EMD's are a low hanging fruit / skimming the gravy way of SEO. Yes an EMD helps, but it is not the be all and end all. It can be beat. I have a site that ranks top 6 in .ca for 'life insurance' and none of those words are in the domain. As a matter of fact, I don't know if lifeinsurance.com or .ca ranks at all for that matter. My point is, it can be beat.

I agree with this!

If you're topping the SE's of course you won't stop promoting your website.

This is what I would do in your situation.

I would first check my onsite elements, the first most important onsite factor I would check is to make sure i have some of my keyword phrases
in my title tag and my main keyword I want to rank best for should be the first words.

For example "Blue widgets | We Also Sell Red, Yellow and Green Widgets at The Widget Company"

This will rank me for Blue Widgets more than anything else.

Next I would check is there is a header tag at the top of my page h1 Blue Widgets For Sale /h1

Next I would check I have Blue Widgets in the content at the top of my page in the first few sentences. Don't spam your keyword in every sentence
or your sites going to look spammy and not rank very well. Maybe even make one of your keyword phrases on the content into a link to another relevant page on your site.

This is really enough onsite optimisation. Once you have done this go out and get good links back to your site, do follow blog comments, forum signatures
Make ezine articles linking back, make a few hub pages, do a word press blog ,using the most important SEO factor in Google's current algorythm anchor text backlinks! This is an absolute must if you want to rank very well for your keyword phrase

Unless your competitor as thousands of high quality backlinks you should rank in no time.
