The system was installed when the house was built almost 13 years ago. I have the motion monitors now, but the newer ones are better and not limited to being "wired". The "glass break" monitors, and "sky bell" are a security must these days, IMO.

The "internet" part, is the ability to get video, pictures sent to your smart phone, and use that app to be able to speak to someone at the door, whether you are home or not. I could be on the 6th hole playing golf (or vacationing out of the country), and get a notification that someone has approached the house and rung the doorbell. I'd get a video feed and speak to them if necessary.

The other additional video system will be installed by a third party alarm company - not the people installing the internal monitoring system.

That sounds like a neat feature.

Am interested in what video system you chose. For retro work a POE system seems to me the best choice but I am just starting to study the things.

The "sky bell" video is proprietary to the residential alarm system company. The exterior system...? Not sure yet. I've seen one system that feeds an interior box with a 4TB drive - again, accessible from anywhere - live and historical video. I didn't pay too much attention to the latter as I knew it was going to be phase 2.

I have kids - big and strong ones - still at home for a couple of years, so even if I'm away a month, they'll be here to dirty up the place. A sad way of making the place look "lived in".

Been there and experienced that.

Have decided to move my office to another floor. To do that I've got to move a total of 3 1/2 rooms of furniture, desks and other office stuff around. I hate moving - especially the heavy stuff. I also have an aversion to trying to untangle the spaghetti of wires and cords associated with my desktop system, and then have to set it all up again. Dust bunnies, tight spaces. Ugh....

I hear you. The last time I needed to move something heavy up the stairs I paid a couple of guys to do it for me. Best $100 I ever spent as they had one heck of a time doing it.

I suspect that if that piece ever comes back down it will be in pieces.
