YouTube vs. Hosting on Your Own Site

I have been considering doing videos and wondered which is better, uploading to YouTube or hosting on my own site so I Googled it. My gut feeling is to host myself because I remain in control.

Quote:
...there are many elements we can’t measure when hosting videos on YouTube as compared to a brand manufacturer’s own website. And more importantly, we can’t optimize the experience or protect our brand from our competitors buying advertisements over it!...
YouTube vs. Hosting on Your Own Site

Which would you pick? Hosting at YouTube (or another video hosting site) and embedding into your pages or hosting yourself?

I suppose you could host yourself and upload to YouTube... Thoughts?

Please backup your recommendation(s).

I much prefer to see a video embedded on the web site I'm searching. Looks more professional in my eyes.
On a side note, I much prefer Vimeo!

As usual, both has benefits over the other. Uploading to YouTube has major benefits over self-hosting. One being, YouTube can drive large amount of viewers with you just optimizing your videos, whereas self-hosting requires optimization to drive website traffic etc. Also, YouTube servers are pretty good and fast so user experience is great where as depending on the servers you are using they may go down for maintenance etc. Also, above all else, one advantage YouTube hosting has "Time" you will save because HTML5 video requires 3 different versions mp4 ogg webm to be reasonably viewed for Wide Range of audience. We recently uploaded our new courses and just about 50 videos took 4 days converting them using Miro Video Converter (Not to mention the time uploading all the different versions of these videos)

Keep in mind that YouTube Standard Licence covers Copyright matters, so the video with YouTube standard license basically is still yours and others can't use them (edit etc.) without permission from you etc. The reason we chose to self-host is because we want to showcase exclusive video tutorials for a small monthly fee (even though YouTube does allow us to rent per view etc. (after looking at this option we found it to be not smart for our objective so thus we now self-host))

deryaSavas,
What are you doing for those that do not have a compatible player?

e.g. in the old days, we use to sniff for Flash and show a static image it they did not have Flash.

A recent thing I noticed is if the user has their security settings set to Tracking protection and Do Not Track in IE embedded YouTube videos do not show.

I`d prefer upload videos on Youtube and I`m still having all control. I think that uploading video on my server will use so much surface

You are not in control if YouTube shuts down.

Youtube hosting is excellent unless it comes to:

- adult vids (or those containing even a single piece of nudity);
- copyrighted vids (soundtracks also count).

And I don't really agree that youtube window on your site looks less professional. A slow and ugly self-made player, this is what is unprofessional.

If you are only making your first steps in that sphere Youtube fits you most. There are many reasons for that:
- less time to create
- price
- less difficulties in designing and creating
- SEO is much more easier.
- you always can change it on your own hosting in future
Of course it is possible in conditions mentioned by Nick PPC.BUZZ

IMO, this could go either way. It depends on what you want to share, how much bandwidth you have to burn and what players are available through your hosting.

I have plenty of bandwidth but was lazy for the one or two I upload to the Tube. The Tube is also more trusted than what purports to be a random player I encounter on a site I've never visited before. YT is a trusted allowed script in my browser.

If done properly the Tube also offers you some 'free' advertising. I have visited and purchased from some sites I've found through a posted vid.

I did get around this for a client by using an iframe.

Thank you, playing around the site, we found IE 8 and 7 is also having problems with YouTube embeded videos (in <iframe> as well) I guess it is one of those browsers which consumes the most amount time to get it right. Thank goodness for Chrome (but then, we are just signing away everything to Google when using Chrome) anyhow, thank you for the input I guess away we go back to work;

I would pick the first option obviously because YT is owned by google and the fact that videos rank well on SERPS makes it a better option...also remember embedding them on your website can also reduce your site speed but i know there are options available to make things work faster.
