Are you implying that all batteries now have regulators in them that cut off current to them at full charge? ...
If thats not the case, then yes, one can overcharge a battery.

Is it bad to charge your iphone overnight most say no but i never do. I charge my phone when it gets low and wait untill it is fully charged.
I like to get full cycle on battery so it should work better longer. They say if you do not run battery down and fully charge they get memory or hold less charge over time. Not sure if true but it has worked well for me.

According to Battery University, leaving your phone plugged in when it's fully charged like you might overnight, is bad for the battery in the long run. Once your smartphone has reached 100 percent charge, it gets 'trickle charges' to keep it at 100 percent while plugged in

I have the same App installed - just installed it last week,
The app says that it is best charging up to 80% as this reduces the battery wear rate.
I tried doing that for a few days, however it is too hard to check to unplug when it reaches 80%

I agree trying to charge it to 70 or 80 percent is a pain. I don't bother. I installed the app when the whole apple slowdown update thing came out just for curiosity.
It All makes sence and this app confirms that all phone batterys do degrade over time.
What I found interesting is charging to 70ish percent gives me around 2250mh however charging from 70 to 100% will only gain me another 75mh.
But if I stop at 70 discharge say 3 percent then charge to 80 percent then discharge a bit then charge to 100 I max out my charging around 2400mh I'm still short of my 3000mh this one year old battery was designed for but again it's to be expected.
As a power user, small business owner that uses his phone 24/7 my degradation would be alot different than the average user.
Even when my s7 was new I was forced to charge my phone 4 times a day.
It's the heat from charging the battery that will degrade them over time. So less u charge it the less degradation u will see over time

I usually charge at night before going to sleep. Upon waking up, it's already full. My worry is the time it has gone up to full before I unplugged the charger. Yikes. I was worried about it, so I stopped. I think overcharging is bad for the phone and the device itself.

Yes, charging overnight is harmful, It’ll destroyed battery life as well as damage mobile phone by heating. It’s better to not fully charged plus not more than one and a half hour.

Years ago I heard on the news it's best to fully charge the phone then unplug at 100%
More recently on the news I heard it's okay to charge the phone periodically during the day and disconnect when you're near or at 100%. Don't leave it on the charger once it's fully charged.
I've been practicing what I heard more recently, charging the phone several times a day as my schedule permits and the phone battery is functioning well.

Its depend on Charger Quality which one you are using .
But perhaps all chargers might be harmful for longer battery life.

Most people plugin charging in the night time only due to their busy schedule in the day time and it is common that they might forget to notice 100% charging. Now a days we have apps in smart phone to manage this issue and to update the notification. But it's possible in all devices, some old devices life span reduces if you keep charge for hours long.
