What to charge?

If you're doing a freelance job, how do you know how much to charge?

Just charge by the hour, by words, by articles? And how much?

(Please be as specific as you can here. I don't know why nobody wants to say how much they charge, but it really helps out us newbies who are just starting out.)

Thanks!

I'd say aim for the happy medium.
You should not position yourself to be cheap(est) ... because people can think of your work as poor quality also if you don't get paid you'll be loosing money because of low margins.
So I'd say focus on a better service, often status updates etc.

I agree with Lordspace comment above but since i'm not a freelance writer, i will not suggest any price's. That is for you to decide. People will pay the money for quality service's.

You could always raise your price as you start to build up a good reputation.

There is a good thread started by a article writer. Check it out when you have some spare time.

If you know you can write great than ask for higher prices; with latest updates quality content will be more and more in demand.

I guess companies pay freelance writers based on the number of articles being written; others are based from the number of words/quota for a day.

It all depends on where you write, but I can tell you, good writers are making around $1.00 USD per word. THAT is the fair going rate from magazines, so I don't see why online should be any different. In another slightly related thread, people asked about demand media and if it was worth it to work for them. I offered some links and supporting information in that thread about fair pay.
