Tips on How to Write a Press Release

Submitting a press release to news channels can help start the traffic coming into a new business website or rekindle interest in an existing one. When people ask what to do to market their business press releases are usually on the list but those that suggest doing this never supply information on how to actually write a press release.

We are going to solve that problem here. This thread is dedicated to tips on now to write an effective press release.

First set of tips comes from CBS Money Watch:
Quote:
A press release is the quickest and easiest way to get free publicity. If well written, a press release can result in multiple published articles about your firm and its products. And that can mean new prospects contacting you asking you to sell to them. Talk about low-hanging fruit!

What's more, press releases are cost effective. If the release results in an article that (for instance) appears to recommend your firm or your product, that article is more likely to drive prospects to contact you than a comparable paid advertisement.

However, most press releases never accomplish that. Most press releases are just spray and pray. Nobody reads them, least of all the reporters and editors for whom they're intended. Worst case, a badly-written press release simply makes your firm look clueless and stupid...

Here are some ideas;
  • 300-500 words
  • A good title using a good keyword
  • A good summary using a good keyword
  • a newsworthy topic - not an advertisement
  • create a standard boiler plate last paragraph
  • try for associated press distribution if possible
  • If international - try SanFran, NY, Philly and Miami distribution points
  • schedule for release early on a Tuesday (3am) to get indexed by the SEs
  • if you can get some anchor text links, be careful, but try for 1 per 100 words

Lastly - use a good release company like PRWeb - but I think they may have been taken over by Cision. Remember, you get what you pay for, so low cost or free releases are next to worthless.

That said, if you had a choice between going with a Media release program or contact database, I'd go for the contact database.

Press release writing tips

- Assess if the story has news value and if a release is appropriate.
- Research the target press and media. Review publications to get a feel for the tone and style. Identify deadlines.
- Identify the key facts – ask who, what, why, where, when, how?
- Draft a template structure for your story.
- Decide who should be quoted from your organisation and if third-party quotes would be useful.
- Check whether a photo can support the release.

Best Regards

News worthy means that at a minimum the story should be about a new development that will directly effect a large amount of people.

Not really. It could be about a new management hire, a tip sheet, or a charity hosted event. It doesn't just have to "affect a large amount of people".

You should go for these tips:

Grab attention with a good headline.
Get right to the point in the first paragraph.
Include hard numbers.
Make it grammatically flawless.
Include quotes whenever possible.
Include your contact information.

You mention everything but the "topic". You could get all the above pointers correct, but if it's an advert, self promotion or anything close to the former or latter conditions, it will either not be released - or be given a very limited distribution.

Of course I'm talking specifically to reputable PR companies, not cheap fly-by-night distributions.

BTW - using quotes doesn't help how "wide" a release is distributed, "hard numbers" helps only when providing factual data for the cause. And, if you don't included contact info, I guess it kind of negates the reason for the release being distributed in the first place, eh?

Making Press Releases isn't a big task. I have submitted lots of pres releases, articles for my website and get lots of positive results plus backlinks from high pr site. All yopu need to write some unique content. There are sites that doesn't ask for unique content and there you can copy paste your press releases.
