It is certainly possible to build a forum in Python, and in fact it's possible to create a forum in most server-side programming languages. Some Python examples are:

Is python the only the language you are looking for to build a forum or other framework will do?
There are several other frameworks that can be used for building a forum, but building a forum with python language is not very common. I would recommend you to do your due diligence if you want to use python to build a forum. Some of the python frameworks web apps are Pylons, Django, and TurboGears.

Learning python is good, but for building a forum website, it is not required to have python made.
