Best Place to Store MYSQL backups/snapshots

This is something that I've been trying to figure out for years now. I've considered using Amazon RDS, but I don't think it's worth it to pay to have less control over my database. I've considered storing the files gzipped outside the root, so I can easily revert to a different snapshot with one command.

This depends for me, is it critically important that I may need it then in multiple places, usually on my machine and on an external drive, along with keeping it on the host, for example if I am to be exporting any database I will usually be SSH'd into a server and will export locally to there and then copy over to my local machine.

But this requires manual work. Sorry, I forgot to specify that I'm looking for an automated solution

Set up a command line MySQL backup and automate it in a Cron job.

Yes, obviously. But this goes back to my original question. Where is a good place to store it so I can easily obtain snapshots, similar to RDS. S3 could be an option or maybe storing it outside of the root directory. I'm just wondering if anyone has a method that works well. For code backups and versions, git is excellent. I could just store it in a git repository, but this would make it difficult for a regular user to revert back to an older database.

Why not just put it on an external drive? Or on an FTP share? Unless the DB is a critical production DB these methods should be fine, I wouldn't be spinning up an S3 solution just to store a DB unless it was vitally important. You've also got things like Drive/Dropbox/OneDrive if you need redundancy in the cloud.

backup and zip it, and then sync to amazon S3 or Dropbox for online backup

Also store one version in your web server
