sounds like you want a nice middle of the road or slightly lower computer. If you can find a nice duel core or comparable computer with a 1000 gig hard drive (1 terra btye) and it has a speed of say 2.8 gigahertz then you should be dandy. Make sure the video card is somewhat good and its got a good screen and you could get a good deal... of course you will be stuck with a windows 8.

Your requirement is not that huge, go for small investment branded stuff with on and off site warranty.

I've been using Dell machines since 2001. What I can say is Dell is surely trustful. You can find a suitable variant with such budget. As for me I advise to choose i5, it is not much more expensive.

alienware are good. Usually I would go with a crazy gaming pc for the best performance also the comfort of knowing you can play high end games in your spare time is good.

Based on the fact that you aren't a gamer. I would still say minimally get an i5 and 4GB-8GB of ram is fine. Since you are a programmer and just a general user I would get something that lasts a decent amount of time on battery.

Then it boils down to whether or not you are Apple or Windows (maybe Linux?).

If Apple I would go for a minimum of 15.5" since the smaller screens are harder to see and you can fit most of your programs on there when you are coding.

If Windows I would either go with something custom built from Cyber Power or Lenovo. Lenovo is known for having solid specs and a good track record.

It depends upon the model of the laptop not the brand only. Even in Dell or HP some models are worst.
