this is my solution

only if you are using asp.net which you can then using urlrewriting module

add this is your web.config section
Code:
<rule name="Redirecttowww" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="^([a-z0-9/]+).aspx$" ignoreCase="true"/> <action type="Redirect" url="www.domain.com"/> </rule>

you need to navigate to the page where you change the welcoming page. This is site actions -> site settings -> welcome page (under look and feel). Then when you change the name of the default page in sharepoint designer for each site under the site pages area for each site, you change the value of the welcome page in the site settings. This way you dont get a 404 error.

use htaccess:

www to non www:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^domain\.com [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) http://domain.com$1 [R=301,L]

non www to www
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.domain\.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

put htaccess file to your domain root folder on your hosting!

.htaccess comes with a performance hit, so if it is possible to modify the vhost files that is ideal.

Code:
<VirtualHost *:80> ServerName {non-www domain} Redirect permanent / {www domain with HTTP} </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName {www domain} # Etc... </VirtualHost>
