Upgrading site to SSL, what do I need to do - checklist

Hey everyone,

I'm considering getting an SSL certificate for my site and I was wondering what things I need to do in order to keep the search engines happy.

I guess I am most concerned with the change from http:// to https://. Am I correct in assuming this will change all my URL's and will need to do some sort of 301 redirect and/or some sort of rewrite in my .htaccess? Will my sitemaps need to be changed to reflect the new https?

Is there anything else I should no about this process? Or, better yet, if someone can point me to a good resource, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

@rootways

Nice link, and definitely a good place to start.

All of your internal links should start to use https, not just to pages, but for images, JavaScript, CSS, etc. This means going through your theme with a fine comb and cleaning all of those up. Of course you can have your web server redirect http to https (more on that below), but not having to do the redirect is a lot cheaper.
But... oh boy, a lot of work to do, something to consider. I guess I'm still weighing the pros and cons of upgrading to SSL.
