I suppose my real question is how much weight is there behind social networking backlinks. Would creating a Facebook group for my particular website and linking to it help, for example? Likewise would tweeting the address of said site make much difference?

Yes asi,
It will help because the web 2.0 concept is all about social netowrking and these sites are very friendly with google as well and the when you link you website with Twitte and Facebook then definitely its going to work for you. I mean you can have about 5000 friends on facebook and thousands you can have through twitter. All you have to do is keep the content of the website good so the visitors will keep coming back
other than that you can get targeted traffic to your website by paying some web traffic specialists....
hope it helps
