Did you read the article Cricket linked us to on the V7N blog?
Sounds a lot like you didn't and remember you can make a comment on that blog post she linked us to.
You can brand yourself making good quality tweets for starters and also traffic if your followers don't unfollow you for tweeting garbage.

Traffic to my website increased 50% after I started using Twitter. I regularly post general updates and max one or two marketing posts in a day.

Nice read, I would suspect RTs are a big part of the model for success. When people day twitter traffic doesn't convert, who thinks it's completely subjective as everyone has different followers and the more on-topic you are consistently it seems the more relevant your followers will be.

How should I go about gaining followers? Add maybe 10-20 people a day? I'm mixing my tweets up between business/personal. I'm using only one account for convenience.

Have you read the article Cricket linked us to yet? There are some good tips in there to know.
I am happy with 2 or 3 followers each day. Just as long as i can keep my existing followers happy, they will never unfollow me. I am slowly going to build up a good list of followers.
Tweeting to many times in one day may always not be a good thing. Guy just posted a response to a few blog comments already. Please check out the blog post. http://blog.v7n.com/2010/08/11/twitt...ps-and-tricks/

You can safely add more than 20 people a day and not have your account disabled. I have followed up to 500 people in one day many times with no problem. 500 seems to be the limit though.

Nice blog cricket, the point here is not to just tweet and retweet again & again on the same source of your business, you must create good impression to be popular on twitter. Create some topics or post some new informations, news, gossip etc. then you noticed you gain a lot of followers from time to time because they now believe in you because you've started an interesting topic and every post you make i'm sure your follower always reading it and now this is the time you will start to invite people for making business with you because you have earned their trust. I always tweet some great news and stuff from newsvine and stumbleupon.

Great article. Well done Guy. I have only one Twitter account, where I post only work related tweets. It's time to think about my personal account

When tweeting to your followers, I suggest using this application name : "Twitterkeys".
Twitterkeys provide some nice symbols you can use to customize your tweets.
Its better to be unique when you're tweeting and try to use visuals, and this seems to be the only way you can do it.
